How To Protect Your Plants During The Winter

Living in Florida one usually doesn’t pay that much attention to keeping plants protected during the winter months. After all with no snow and most winters not getting anywhere close to freezing it can seem like worrying about plants for winter isn’t something that needs to be considered. However while we aren’t going to get snow any time soon temperatures can still drop enough to damage plants especially more fragile ones. There are a couple things you can do during particularly cold times to make sure your fragile tropical plants survive.

Use Coverings

The simplest but very effective method is to simply cover your plants with sheets or frost blankets. Just keep your trees covered on particularly cold nights. In Florida you won’t generally have to use anything other than sheets so need to spend money on frost blankets (except maybe some places in North Florida). Just find a good sheet and cover up your tree on nights when it supposed to get cold. Mulch also helps keeps the roots from freezing but that’s hardly a concern in Florida.

Keep Them In A Greenhouse

A little pricier but you may want to consider getting a greenhouse. A greenhouse will allow you to grow tropical plants year round and keep them safe from changes in temperature. One thing that’s great about a greenhouse is the more plants that you put in it the warmer it’s going to be and therefore the healthier your plants are going to be. Moving all of your tropical plants into a greenhouse for winter or just keeping them there all year is another great option to keep your plants safe during cold winter months.

These two are really all you need for keeping you plants safe in Florida during the winter months. For smaller plants you can also just take them in the house during particularly cold nights as well if you don’t have a greenhouse and don’t feel like buying sheets for every plant in your yard.
